Awarding a PSM Distinction is considered in all countries a favour and not a right. All PSM Distinctions are awarded for life. Holders of PSM Distinctions are allowed to append to their name the initials corresponding to the distinction/distinctions they have gained or awarded. In cases where the holder of a PSM Distinction commits a serious offence against PSM or against a national federation affiliated with PSM, , the distinction can be cancelled by the PSM Award Council. No appeal is then possible.
